Casualty care exercise in Portlet Bay

23/06/2021

Recently the St Helier ALB crew undertook a great casualty care exercise in Portlet Bay to practice extracting a casualty by sea.

Our training mannequin 'Dead Fred' was deposited on the eastern side of Janvrin's Tomb with a note around his neck describing his condition and how he got there "Fred is a 30 year old angler who was setting up his rod when he slipped and hit his head and broke his ankle!"

The ALB crew were given a brief synopsis of what had been reported by a member of the public and then launched to the scene. It was immediately apparent that the ALB daughter craft (the 'Y-Boat') would be required to get crew on scene and assess the casualty.

Fred was assessed and triaged before being extracted back onto the ALB to receive further treatment. You will be happy to know that Fred made it and will live, only to be dumped on another rock in the near future!

It's so important for our crews to keep their casualty care skills fresh as we never know what the next pager alert may bring.
