This afternoon, the St Catherine’s inshore lifeboat was tasked to investigate a reported EPIRB signal.
Falmouth Coastguard first received the emergency alert from a position approximately 1.5NM north of La Coupe Point. A second signal was later picked up by Jersey Coastguard from St Helier.
The crew launched to the reported location and carried out two search patterns over the course of more than two hours. They were then stood down and returned to station.
It was later confirmed that the EPIRB had been disposed of in a bin in St Helier, with the GPS antenna cut off, triggering a false alert.
Please dispose of EPIRBs responsibly. Remove the battery before discarding the device. If you are unsure, speak to a local marine shop or Jersey Coastguard. It helps prevent unnecessary emergency callouts.
