It was an exceptionally busy day for RNLI Jersey yesterday, with our local volunteer lifeboat crews launching multiple times to incidents around the Island.
The first call came while the St Helier all-weather lifeboat was already out on exercise in St Aubin's Bay. The crew were diverted to assist an 8-metre motor vessel with five people on board after it suffered engine failure approximately two miles off Noirmont.
Later, the St Catherine's inshore lifeboat was launched to reports of kite surfers in difficulty near Bouley Bay.
While returning to station, the lifeboat was immediately re-tasked alongside the St Helier all-weather lifeboat to assist in the search after an unattended inflatable paddleboard raised concerns that two children may be in the water. A large search area was covered before States of Jersey Police confirmed there were no reports of missing children, allowing both lifeboats to stand down.
As the St Helier lifeboat was returning to station, it was tasked once again to assist a 30-foot motor vessel approximately three miles west of Corbiere. The vessel, with one person on board, had suffered electrical failure and required assistance.
Days like yesterday are a reminder that our volunteer crews are ready to respond at any hour, whatever the weather and whatever the call.
If you're planning to head out on the water, please take a few simple steps before you go. Check the weather and tide, ensure your vessel is well maintained, carry the correct safety equipment, wear a suitable lifejacket, and always let someone know where you're going and when you expect to return.
In an emergency at sea, call 999 and ask for Jersey Coastguard.
