This afternoon the St Helier all-weather lifeboat was tasked by Jersey Coastguard to assist an 11-metre sailing yacht reported in difficulty off the south-west coast of Jersey.
When the crew reached the vessel the sailors were safe and making good progress under sail. The issue was a complete engine failure, and with harbour ahead the skipper was unsure how to proceed without power. The crew made contact, talked through the situation, and agreed that bringing the yacht in under tow was the right thing to do.
It was a lively shout. Conditions kept things interesting and communication with the casualty was challenging throughout. The crew handled a demanding tow well and the yacht was brought safely alongside in St Helier Harbour.
Mechanical failure is the single biggest cause of lifeboat callouts to sailing and motor vessels, making up nearly one in five of all RNLI launches. Before heading out, make sure your VHF radio is working and that everyone on board knows how to use it. It is your most reliable link to the Coastguard if things go wrong. Full safety advice at
