My father had been in the Royal Navy during the war and from an early age encouraged me to swim, surf, kayak and in my early teens bought me a Mirror sailing dinghy. I learnt to sail at school under the watchful eye of Reg Nicolle, a former member of the lifeboat crew, and I still remember a tour of St Aubin Bay on the Elizabeth Rippon lifeboat as part of a ‘navigation class’, something that wouldn’t be allowed these days! I was appointed as Treasurer of the Fundraising Guild in September 2005.
