The RNLI is the first major charity in the UK to undertake to only contact its supporters if they have given their express consent to be contacted.
From 1st January 2017, we will only contact our supporters if they have given their express permission for us to do so. The result of this is that existing supporters will need to contact us to confirm that they are happy for us to continue to contact them about fundraising and other events.
The RNLI has taken this stance in recognition that our supporters trust and respect the RNLI and we want to ensure their trust was well placed by doing the right thing and giving them control over how we communicate with them in the future.
This means that individuals must choose to be contacted by the RNLI. For our supporters this means that unless they have elected to ‘opt in’ to receive communication from us, they will not hear from us directly again. In the short term we know that this will impact our ability to fundraise and we are developing new ways of working to make up for the potential shortfall in income.
Any supporters who have not responded to the opt in ask(s) by 31st December 2016 will be treated as an automatic opt out and their details will be removed from our local and national lists. These individuals will therefore not be contacted again, unless they opt in at a later date.
RNLI Jersey is therefore appealing to all of those supporters who want to continue receiving information by post or email to respond to the communications that have been sent out. If any supporter did not receive either of the communications sent in July and again in September, you may not be aware of this change.
